VPL expanded its marketing of live online assistance to students aged 12 Ð18, billing the services as Homework Help. The marketing plan called for a logo to identify the new service, as well as print materials such as bookmarks and posters. A transit advertising component was also required for both interior and exterior bus ads.

Working closely with the Director of Marketing, and the illustrator Susan Camilleri-Konar, we developed a series of pieces depicting students in frustrating homework situations and offered assistance through Homework Help. The advertising copy was written by the Marketing Coordinator, Marya Gadison.

Related to the library’s online information service for adults, Find It Now, Homework Help’s logo uses the same typographic device of bold and light and finishes with a pencil as exclamation mark drawing the horizontal rule between the name and the tag line.

Transit advertising set the design for most of the pieces. The ads would be horizontal and utilize a palette of rich and vibrant colours and lively typography to get the attention of our target demographic.

Backgrounds were full bleeds and the characters and type prominent with the message in a matter-of-fact presentation below. We had to accommodate the new Homework Help, VPL, and City of Vancouver logos into the transit designs as well.

The bookmarks moved the messaging to the reverse side and dropped the city logo which was not required in this instance. These proved popular as children started collecting full sets. We have printed more than 12,000 bookmarks to date.

For the photocopied posters I dispensed with the flood filled full bleed background, using a star burst that served to tie the posters to the ads with colour but have proven effective in getting attention independently.
