The Chinese-Canadian Genealogy website launched in November of 2005. It is unique in the world and has been recognized as a valuable resource by such organizations as the Chinese-Canadian Historical Society of British Columbia, the Chinese Historical Society of America and the Government of Canada .
Growing out of the popular genealogy programs at Vancouver Public Library, the website provides extensive information about genealogical research, the history of Chinese-Canadians, and more.
To accomodate the wide range of information, including in-depth essays, photographs, drawings and reproductions of government records from the National Archives, I developed a modular page design that would organize information of varying size and complexity.
The top of the page is reserved for site-wide navigation, the left hand-column holds local navigation of any length and any related photographs or imagery.
The main content section displays text and supporting tables and maps, and doubles as the display area for photographs in the site’s special image gallery which features a fading transition between images.
Chinese characters combined with traditional colours of red black and gold emphasize the cultural focus of the site.
Posters (11" x 17") and handbills (5.5" x 8.5") accompanied the well-attended launch of the site and a bookmark commemorated the event.
